An introduction

It started with bling...not rock-on-your-finger bling (I already have that) but the scores of sequins and sparkles at my bling-themed 30th birthday party.

Family and friends came decked out in their finest gold and silver get-up and with them came a pile of shimmering gift bags and boxes brimming with glistening treasures, all perfect for a girl obsessed with all things sequined and sparkly. There was also a raft of travel gift cards with my name on them, calling me to venture overseas for the amazing round-the-world holiday I had always dreamed of.

Almost a year of hard saving later (thanks Arianne and Tristan for the blinging piggy bank), my husband Bryan and I have tickets and travel insurance, have packed everything from tanktops and thongs to toothbrushes and the obligatory Travelan, and we're all set to embark on our 8-week adventure through China, Europe and the USA.

We’ll be drinking beer at Oktoberfest, climbing the ancient steps of the Great Wall, watching the twinkling nightlights of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower, soaking in Budapest’s famous hot springs, enjoying the sights of Santorini and riding pushbikes through the fog in San Francisco, among other typical (and some not so typical), tourist experiences.

We’ll also visit the hang outs of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda in New York (at least I will, while Bryan no doubt enjoys some of New York’s finest brews in a nearby pub…)

I also expect that we’ll probably lose some luggage along the way, be jetlagged, be completely confused by our total lack of foreign language skills – ni hao (hello) is the extent of my Chinese so far – and eat some dodgy meals that will leave us wanting to be no more than 10 paces from a toilet at any given time.

But in the end, as with any good adventure, it will all be totally worth it.

And hopefully we’ll even find some bling along the way…
