Gone, but not forgotten

It has been almost a decade since terrorists stunned the world by flying two planes into the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Centre, killing over 3000 people.

But the events of that day are still as sad and shocking as ever, as a visit to the WTC memorial reminded us.

Work is currently underway to rebuild the Ground Zero site (above), but the tragic tales of those who perished (some of whom are pictured below) remain.

From haunting excerpts of final phonecalls passengers on the doomed United Airlines flights made to loved ones minutes before they died to personal accounts from emergency services personnel and people who miraculously escaped from the crumbling towers alive, this tribute centre offers an insightful and moving experience for the 300,000 people who flock there each year.

Even visits to the spectacular observation decks of the Rockefeller Centre and the Empire State Building are a sombre reminder of the tragedy as the gaping hole in the skyline among a sea of towering skyscrapers can clearly be seen.
