Soaking up the atmosphere in Budapest

Playing chess in the pool may seem a little unusual, but it is all part of an ordinary day in the life of many people in Budapest.

Budapest prides itself on being the spa capital of the world and there’s an abundance of therapeutic baths to visit. While many locals and tourists visit the baths to float, bubble and steam or be treated to beauty treatments in the massage rooms, many others consider it a daily ritual and social catch-up and use their time in the baths to indulge in various hobbies – like chess.

At Szechenyi Spa we not only watched men play chess in the water (where temperatures vary from 20C-40C depending on which pool you choose), but we also spotted people who were reading books in the pool, while many women bobbed around in brightly-coloured shower caps as they made the most of the spa jets, waterfalls and whirlpools featured in the main pools.

Szechenyi is one of the largest bathing complexes in Europe and there are 15 pools all up (12 indoor and 3 outdoor).  Pure bliss.
